In Search of Nevaeh: A Tale of a Networked Name
Some names slowly rise into popularity, others appear overnight like fashion cloudbursts. One of the biggest cloudbursts of recent years is the girl's name Nevaeh. Unknown as recently as the '90s, Neveah suddenly appeared as the 268th most popular name for American girls in 2001, and has been rising ever since. It's especially popular with African Americans and evangelical Christians, and as a character name in fantasy fiction.
Where did it come from? The simple answer is that Nevaeh is an anagram: Heaven backwards. Consider it kin to the many angelic names of the moment, like Angel, Miracle, and Heaven itself. The anagramming is unusual, but not unprecedented...the 1900s hit Reva was a remix of Vera.
But as always, linguistic origins only tell part of the story. A hit this big and sudden usually has a birthplace in popular culture. The name Camryn appeared in 1997, when Camryn Manheim hit tv on "The Practice." The name Lyric was born via Jada Pinkett Smith, star of the 1994 film Jason's Lyric. A name as unlikely as Nevaeh should be traceable to such a launching pad. Yet the Internet Movie Database lists no people or characters named Nevaeh. No Nevaeh has recorded an album. As for celebrity children, the earliest Nevaeh I've dug up is the daughter of singer Sonny Sandoval of the rock group P.O.D., born in 2000.
It's an unlikely launching pad. Of the thousands of parents choosing the name, how many do you suppose have even heard of Sonny Sandoval? Perhaps just a few...but a well-networked few. As a Christian rock group, P.O.D. taps into a strong, geographically distributed community where news travels fast. On every Christian parenting bulletin board (and there are plenty) , you'll find parents suggesting the name Nevaeh. The rock connection isn't mentioned--it was simply the name's point of entry into a rich social network, and the idea grew virally from there. Nevaeh may be the first baby name phenomenon created by the Internet.

Some jackasses posted that Nevaeh was a lower-class or downwardly-mobile name. How exactly does that work? Appears they might be trying to send some racial undertones in their statement. Or maybe that a Nevaeh will be destined to never make more than the minimum wage. Anyway, I'm sure you'll be naming your daughter Emily like the greatest majority of bland parents out there. Since you can choose its last name, how about Emily BUFFETT-GATES since those names represent the pinnacle of the upper class.
If you want to name your child after heaven, why not just name her 'Heaven'? It's much much better than Nevaeh...which is just weird! At least people will be able to pronounce Heaven!
I recently heard of that name through my boyfriend. He stated that he too heard it on MTV Cribs. I love it. It is so different. Turning the word Heaven around into a name is not demonic. It is better than taking a bad word and twisting it around into a name which will define a child for life. I think people look too much into things. Do not get me wrong, the meaning of names are important. The name of a child and its meaning actually is foretelling what the child will become. (spiritually speaking) If someone wants to name their child a name from the word Heaven, maybe they are speaking it into existence that their child will make it to heaven. To sum it up, it is not worth bickering over on this board.
I recently heard this name through my boyfriend. He stated that he heard about it on MTV cribs also. I just love it. It is different and I did not think that many people knew about it-but guess I was wrong. I do not feel that it is demonic or santanic to use the word, Heaven and create a name out of it. It is certainly more appropriate to do this, than create a name from something demonic. It really is not worth arguing over. Do not get me wrong, a name is very important. A name foretells what a person is to be-speaking a word over a child's life. In this instance, one may be speaking that their child will go to heaven or that their child will strive to be as peaceful as heaven. Again, I love the name and I think that I might even possibly name my child that.
Are you people kidding me? Associated with strippers/porn? My sisters name is Debbie - does that also relate to porn (Debbie does Dallas)? My daughter is Nevaeh Lynn, oops let me guess another porn association (Amber Lynn, Ginger Lynn) Get a clue people. I'm certain that YOUR name "fits in" perfecly in an everyday bland world, Mr./Mrs. Perfect.
Wow! I don't understand how some people can be so critical. I mean really ... get a life. I'm 23 and due with my first child in May. I'm thinking of the name Nevaeh for a girl. I actually have never heard it before until very recently. A friend of mine just started dating a girl he met who has a daughter named Nevaeh. When he told me about her I really didn't think twice about the name. I mean I thought it was unique and different but I didn't really consider it as a name for my child until I saw it in a baby name book. I pronouce the the name Nuh-VAY-uh but it can be pronounced however the parent of the child chooses. As for all the people who have rude comments to make ... I think perhaps you need to grow up and re-evaluate your personalities. And who is to say whether or not it is a "real" name? What exactly makes a name "real"? I'm sorry to bust your bubbles but if it's used as a name, it's a name. And as for meaning ... who exactly decides what a name means or what the correct meaning for a name is? My name is Sarah, which supposedly means princess ... does that automatically make me a princess? I think not. Besides all names have to start somewhere. The world didn't begin with a list of names we were to choose from which were considered "real" and "appropriate". Just because Nevaeh is a relatively new name doesn't make it any less of a name than one that has been around for centuries. And as for spelling, its not a hard name to remember how to spell .. its Heaven backwards, remember? So as long as you can spell Heaven you can spell Nevaeh. And as for those of you who are convinced a child is destined to become a hooker or a stripper if named Nevaeh ... sorry about your luck but a name has next to nothing to do with where you go in this world ... its about how your child is raised and what they do with their life that will determine who they will be in the years to come. And I'm more than willing to bet there are at least three hookers or strippers in this world with the same name that you have. I mean honestly give it up. Nevaeh is beautiful name and if you disagree fine but like most of us learned as children "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".
I happen to like the name Nevaeh. I like it pronounced Nuh-VAY-uh. However I am having A LOT of difficulty finding a middle name that fits well with it. I know many of you have mentioned you have children of your own with the name Nevaeh ... what were some of the middle names you considered? I'd be grateful for any KIND suggestions anyone might have. Thank you!
Nevaeh is one of those names that everyone thinks is cool & unique, so calls their kid that & then it goes out of fashion when everyone realises how many other babies are called that now.. & when the kid hits 15 & isnt so cute anymore.& Heaven Nevaeh.. wtf?sorry but that is rather ridiculous.
ayjqwSophy didn't your mother ever tell you if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all? First of all who are you to say that in fifteen years Nevaeh won't be just as cute of a name as it is now? And if not who cares ... its not like Sophy is a real hot name either for the younger or older crowd. So I'd suggest keeping negative comments to yourself.

i think its kinda funny that people get so worked up.. obviously its not going to be to everyones taste.. i love the name Lilia and im sure many people hate it. i realy dont think it matters!! just for the record, i think its a lovely name and yes i heard of it through Sonny on cribs (pronounced Nevayuh sounds nicer i think)
here are some suggestions for middle names: Lilia (Nevaeh Lilia is just so pretty!), holly, Megan, Kathryn (katerina)..ok so maybe these wont work!! but im just picking random names =p its hard to know without knowing what the surname is.. that makes all the difference.. i was nearly called rebekah burnside which would be awful..amy works just fine
I have been in love with this name and have never heard it was the guy from pod's daughter.. it is a beautiful name.. very different and unique..
i have a 4mth old daughter which i named nevaeh,i had chose a name all the way thru my pregnancy then by chance heard the name nevaeh and loved it straight away, i dont care if its a made up name .its a beautiful name its pronouned ne vay ah
i called my daug nevaeh lily which i think is pretty, ive also heard of nevaeh beau,
nevaeh has become quite popular in the uk now i have a daughter called nevaeh whose 3 months and i love the name so much
Judging from the grammar and spelling of those who have posted in favor of "Neveah," I'd say "downwardly mobile" is generous!
What about actress Neve Campbell? I believe there is also a female rap artist with a similar name. As for pronunciation, I think NEH-vee-uh sounds best.
Neveah seems to be a pretty name and I side with those who think if you like it, why not use it. For those who link it with porn or some sort of scary anti-christian underworld - hey, there's a whole big wide world out here devoid of such bigotry. Might be nice if you discard the hysteria and enjoy Neveah for what it is - a name!
As a UK visitor I'd never heard of this name before, and I must say, I do find it rather bizarre. I'm sure it won't be long before Nevaeh makes it over here, especially where I live as there seems to be loads of parents looking for unusual names.
you have it wrong the name first came out on a primetime years ago . they interviewed this big time family that ran prostution thing and she had came up with the name in the 80's
Whorish invention.
This name is an abomination. This name is not unique or unusual. Every person who has bad taste in names is using it becuase they are under the false pretense that it's "unique". I laugh each time I hear somebody call it unusual or unique, I've heard it a thousand times 2. Please dont use this name. Ask any Baby Name Message board, this is the most hated , cheesy name that anybody could bestow upon a child.
My real name is Heaven. I was born in 1970, so for my parents it was mostly a hippie thing. I hate the name neveah! Just call the kid Heaven! I love my name now I think of it as a plus when meeting people and for my resume to stand out! Spelling it backwards is just silly!!
I totally agree, isn't it kind of strange to have heaven spelled backwards. doesnt' that kind of mean hell?
I am Sonny's dad from the band POD and Nevaeh is my grand daughter. This weeks news and incredible response worldwide on top names is a week for me to remember as long as I live.
I have heard so many comments about Nevaeh's name. Most of them are great and make me proud. But the more I read daily concerning the subject, I find a few mean and in bad taste.
Nevaeh is heaven backwards and my son and daughter did not hear the name somewhere and decide "Cool name;lets use it." They were reminded of Sonny's mom and my late wife, Aurelia and where she is & has been since she left our family. We know she is in heaven and is probably enjoying the fact that now our grand daughter is plastered all over cyberspace.
So God bless all the negative authors out there that are helping to keep my babies name "Alive" out there. And for all the chatters that mentioned "get a life" to all the comments from the common clave, get a grip. What are you doing responding if you have such valuable time reading about my grand daughter?
It's a beautiful name, my daughters name is Nevaeh Grace, and I had never even heard of "Sonny from POD," until I logged onto this sight. I named my daughter Nevaeh because it's a constant reminder to me of a better place, that I hope someday I will be lucky enough to be a part of. It holds its own special meaning to my family, as I am sure it does to every mother out there who chose that name for their child. I look at it this way... GOD judges us for what is in our hearts and how we live our lives (as only he can). And I hardly think HE is going to punish us for using HEAVEN spelled backwards as a name, just because there are a few satanic freaks out there who chosen to use biblical content in that manner. GOD knows whats in our hearts, let him be the judge.
By the way, to the ANONYMOUS person who posted this, "Judging from the grammar and spelling of those who have posted in favor of "Neveah," I'd say "downwardly mobile" is generous!" Who are you to talk about spelling? You couldn't even manage to spell the name NEVAEH, and it must have been posted on this sight at least 50 or more times. Who's downwardly mobile now??????? :)
Many people may not know who Sonny Sandoval of POD is, however, they DO know of MTV and its popular show, "Cribs." That's where many parents-to-be first heard of Nevaeh. The Internet chats rooms were secondary, imo. I find Neveah a bit cheesy. The whole concept of heaven backwards makes me think of going in the opposite direction -- hell. Maybe it's just me. I fear this naming phenomenon will severely date these children (mostly female) which may not be such a great thing when these ladies reach middle age. ;-) What I also don't understand is the increasing practice of creatively spelling Nevaeh as Neveah, Nevayah, Navaya, etc., which sort of defeats the purpose of naming the child so one can tell others, "It's heaven backwards."
I noticed in my own comments that I spelled Nevaeh incorrectly which brings me to another problem and that is writing and thinking at the same time, "heaven backwards." I really do have to think about it everytime. After all, how many words are we in the habit of writing backwards? Perhaps that explains some of the spelling variations.
It's better than "Apple", imo.
On www.behindthename.com, 'Nevaeh' is, safe to say, the most despised name on the site. It is seen there as trashy, callous, and ugly. I myself think that it is rather ugly. And, you cannot argue, no one REALLY knows how to pronounce it. It is grammat. At first glance, people stutter.
I find it interesting that the people so in love with this name can't seem to grasp the need for proper spelling or the use of a period.
That and screaming in all caps about your precious little bundle does not make you do anything but look idiotic.
Seriously, do any of these people remember how brutal kids can be to their peers?
This name is an abombination, horribly ugly and trendy. I absolutely fear what the children of our future will be. It's terrible.
the reality is that its no longer a unique name, and therefore by the time the new generation is older it will be as common as ashley. on the other hand it will date the children as they age and the name loses popularity. i think its a cute name. gramatically speaking it shold be neh-vay but i prefer
Neh-vay-uh, go figure.
Some people mentioned the actress Neve Campbell; well, 'Neve' is the anglicised form of the Gaelic name Niamh, which I think looks beautiful written down. It's unusual but not so much that nobody will know how to pronounce it - you might get a few 'Nee-am-huh?'s but a lot of people, especially those of Irish/Scottish descent, will know it is 'Neve'. I also knew a girl called Meabh, pronounced 'Mave', although she did go by the nickname 'meeb' for fun!
Yeah the name NEVE has nothing to do with Heaven or Nevaeh. Its Gaelic.
Some of you need to get a life to be cruel and mean regarding a child's name is one of the meanest things I've ever came accross. Who gave you the right to judge in such depth!!! I am due November 5th and if I have a baby girl her name will infact be Nevaeh Joy. It is a beautiful name which is mine and my husbands choice. I have nothing but ill thoughts towards you sick people who would come on this site and bash a BABY'S name grow up and how dare you...If you don't like a name keep it to yourself it is very offensive to thoes who have the name or whos children have the name!
My Granddaughter is Nevaeh Rae and her beautiful mother is Ondrea Rae, they are two of thee most lovely girls on this side, and the name fits them both!. So sorry to those of you who are so ugly that you find it necessary to criticize. Neveah also means " One of Gods angels " as we all are.
15 year old momma found this name watching MTV= CLASSY
I love it, and not because it is "Heaven" backwards, but because it has a nice ring to it, IMO.
I think it is hated so much, because of the whole "Heaven" backwards thing, which I happen to think is silly.
If you don't like it...don't use it...it is as simple as that...
I am sure many people feel the same way about your names as well...
To each their own.
Hey thats my middle name. There's a story behind it.
My name is Nevaeh and I pronounce it neh-vah. Nevaeh was my grandmothers name and she always pronounces it like that.
After reading through these comments I decided to add one that will really throw some of you meanies for a loop...ready, here it comes...I chose the beautiful name Nevaeh for my son. I pronounce it Nu-Vay-Uh. Before you start posting rude comments let me tell you why I chose that name. I had chosen the name Heaven for my little girl and then found out it was a little boy, so my sister in law suggest flipping the name around to make it Nevaeh. I LOVE that his name is Heaven spelled backwards, because after two terrible miscarriages I KNOW my son was a gift from God...and he deserved a name that shows it.
My name is Jesus. I kind of regret my parents naming me this considering I've been taunted too many times by friends and dumb kids at school, work, parties, co-relatives. I could understand why they did it considering also that is a popular name in Cuban culture; however yes, be wise about your son/daughters names. It could either make'em or break'em. As for the name Nevaeh, sounds too close to Nevada (close to strippers? lol! joke, sorry). It's significance is nice, but seriously, try to put yourself in their shoes (not literally, unless you're tinkerbell?) but seriously seriously would you like to apply at jobs, or go to college, and have to say "im Jesus" or "im Nevaeh" and then have to clarify it twice because someone wants to crack a joke about it. it's seriously not cool, pick a decent name from the bible, like Adam, or Alex, something potent with abilities, not something society might slowly deteriorate the person with... Do as you please, I'm not trying to knock down anyone's hopes and dreams, just think.
I will be naming my daughter Nevaeh. She is due to arrive On January 10, 2007. I to first heard the name on MTV and thought it was a very beautiful name. However, I never thought I would actually name my own daughter this. Unfortunatly my sister lost a baby girl to SIDS last year. When I found out I was having a girl I knew that she was sent from Heaven. My niece's name was Arianna. My daughter will Be named, Nevaeh Arianna in memory of my niece.
I named my daughter Nevaeh! Its a beautiful name. Just because people name their daughters Nevaeh doesent mean other people are gonna start naming their babies NITAS! Are u retarded. I named my daughter NEVAEH because its heaven spelled backwords and how is nevaeh not a pretty name?
Dont u people have better things to do with ur time then sit around and try to degrade people on the names of their babies. Get a life. Seriously. Grow up! I honestly dont belief that all the girls with the name Nevaeh are going to be made fun of! Its Heaven backwords. Its a beautiful name and if u dont like it fine dont name ur kid Nevaeh. But u dont need to make fun of the people that do. Everyone names their baby a certain name for a certain reason. And i dont think we all need to explain that to u! Some people dont like their names. But its not up to u what ur name is. Its not like u can talk when ur born. Deal with it its a name. Get over it! Lots of people dont like things but u just get over it.

My daughter is named Nevaeh, and every time I introduce her to someone, they think it's the coolest name ever. She was born in Feb 2003, and it seems like every year, there's one or two more people who I meet who tell me, "Oh, my so-and-so's daughter is named that..." It's definitely gaining in popularity, and I'm just glad I didn't settle on something stupid and bland. Also, it'll help with the telemarketers: no one will want to call her because her name looks too difficult to pronounce. :)
All the people w/ negative things 2 say about the name Nevaeh Should really find a hobby for one thing, because your saying how bad you feel for these children when all ur really doing is talking about innocent children who had no control about what there names are the name nevaeh is beautiful whats done is done sitting here talking about how dumb you think it is wont do anything you all probably just have boring names or something most people dont like their name anyways an to the person who said "15 year old momma found this name watching MTV= CLASSY" thats just not tru and if a girl is 15 having a baby shes got more things to worry about then naming her child if ur having children and this is what you do with ur free time then its ur future children who will be making fun of these children. an this name may be uncommon but its not new i met an 80 yr old women with this name she was a wonderful and thats why I NAMED MY DAUGHTER THIS!! oh and she went her whole life with this name and turned out JUST fine
