The American Name Society's take on 2011

Jan 11th 2012

The American Name Society -- the scholarly organization devoted to the study of naming -- has announced its annual slate of names of the year. This year's ANS Trade Name of the Year may ring a bell: it's Siri, which was chosen as the Baby Name Wizard Name of the Year a month ago. Take a double bow, Apple!

Some more highlights from the ANS honorees:

- Fictional name of the year: Lisbeth Salander. (Timely for me, as I've been grappling with how to handle "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" in the next edition of the Baby Name Wizard book. Until now, the standard American spelling has been Lizbeth and the name has been largely Latina.)

- Overall name of the year: Arab Spring. (A little surprising that their explanation of the choice, which describes the "evocative use of the word 'Spring' to create a memorable positive name," doesn't mention the model of the Prague Spring and the other "Springs" named after it since.)

The ANS website has their full list of ANS honorees (PDF) and rationales behind the choices.

Thanks go to Cleveland Kent Evans for his update on the ANS selections.

Effectively stated, mostly, but don't you really feel as if the concern is more complicated than that?

So Siri was the name of the year. I hear that name every so often but it still sounds hard to say. When I say it I almost want to say serious :)
