My Great-Grandfather was born Vary Americus Hyler, though he later preferred to be called "Mack." He was born in the "Dutch Fork" region of South Carolina and descended from generations of German immigrants.

Americus is the Latin form of the Italian Amerigo (which gave America its name). In the 19th century it was occasionally bestowed on both boys and girls, especially in the American South, as a classical take on America. While Latin in form it is actually Germanic in origin, deriving from Emmerich/Heimrich.
