Comments and insights on the name Barbara: | Edit

Now strictly a girl name

I didn't know it ever was a boy's name

The only male I know of with the name is Dale Barbara (Barbie) in Stephen King's "Under the Dome", and it is his last name, not his first name. I didn't know it was ever a last name in real life. What was Stephan King thinking?

What the?!? Barbara is a boy's name too?!? That is the worst boy's name EVER. TOO GIRLY!!!!

I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation

A name originally used for anyone who did not speak Greek. It referred to the unintelligible chatter of foreigners which sounded to the Greeks like bar-bar.

Personal experiences with the name Barbara: | Edit

I was named after my Great-Grandmother, whose name was Johanna Barbara, so my mom named me Barbara Jo. I don't hate my name like many young girls do nowadays that have the name. When I was growing up there were a few Barbara's in my class in grade school, so we each had to go by Barbara plus our last name initial. I didn't like being called Barbara, because when my mom yelled out the door for me to come inside, it always sounded like she was mad at me. I'm 53 years old now, and go by just Barb. It's short and sweet.

Meanings and history of the name Barbara: | Edit

Barbara, Varvara, or Barbra in any spelling is a classical name - reaching back through the Middle Ages, previously and notably through the Byzantine & Roman Civilizations and beginning at the Ancient Grecian civilization. Intolerant Greeks originally used the name to imitate the sounds of those who did not speak their language; those whose speech sounded like "bar bar bar" to Grecian ears; eventually it began to describe those who did not follow customs of Greece and eventually those of Rome - or, the conventions of any given land. As Grecians traded with other civilizations - including the Persians, Egyptians, Romans, Phoenicians, and the Scythians, the name began to signify "beautiful, mysterious stranger", as popularity increased, spreading through neighboring, though still distant cultures.

The name Barbara comes from the Greek word Barabas (mysterious stranger) or (one who does not speak the language) also (beautiful stranger).
