Benaiah means "The Lord builds" which was the inspiration to the name Beniah. Benaiah son of Jehoaida was one of King David's top soldiers. 2 Samuel 23:20-23.
Benaiah was very loyal to David in his latter years as he was mentioned for carrying out David's order to anoint Solomon as king instead of his elder and more favorable son Adonijah. 1 Kings 7:5-8
Benaiah did not accept Adonijah's invitation to join him, instead he was in a small group that facilitated in declaring King Solomon as the new ruler of Israel. (1 Kings 1:28-50).
Benaiah at King Solomon's command killed Adonijah, the brother who tried taking the kingship from Solomon, after he disrespectfully asked through their mother to marry one of his concubines.
Benaiah at the command of King Solomon killed the top Army commander Joab in the tent of the Lord as he was holding onto the ark of the covenant's mercy seat (cover). Benaiah was then appointed by King Solomon as the top Army commander.
Benaiah was then again commanded by King Solomon to kill the prophet Shimei after he violated the land boundary that was agreed upon. Shimei also cursed King David when he went exile during Abasalom's coup. David made Solomon promise not to kill Shimei for the offense he committed against him. However, Solomon held a grudge against Shimei and confined him to a marked territory that had called for his death if he violated it.
Benaiah signifies a character of loyalty, obedience, courage, and great strength. Benaiah had killed two powerful leaders of Moab, a lion in a pit, and a soldier of great stature using his staff to take the enemies spear and used it against him.
