Bracken doesn't just mean fern in colloquial English. We country folk use it to mean any type of wilderness or woods, "out in the bracken" means something like "deep in the bush, deep in the thick of the wild." I like it for a rough-and-tumble little boy but I LOVE it as a masculine country name for a girl. I saw someone on Pinterest say Bracks/Brax could be a nickname to distance it from brackish (not a word you're likely to hear in regular conversation anyway!). That nn is on trend and just cute as a unisex!
While bracken is the name of a fern, it's a little-known word compared to brackish (meaning briny, distasteful). This gives the name an unpleasant aura to my ear, alas.
I don't think I've ever heard brackish used in everyday speech. Maybe in books. But the name isn't Brackish, anyway. It's Bracken, which has a lovely, green, wild connotation.
