Bruce is a strong, smart, and masculine-sounding name...No worries about this ever becoming a name for little girls!
Being born in 1960 and named Bruce (after an uncle who died at 2 months!) this name was difficult to live with, after the Country Gentlemen did the song "Big Bruce" about a swishy hair dresser who died going back in a fire at the salon for his purse. I was 9 and the ribbing was nonstop. Even Bruce Lee was no help. It ceased after "Moonlighting" and the rise of Bruce Willis. Now the name has all but disappeared from the landscape. Oh yes, and Robert the Bruce (a King of Scotland) became know as the guy who betrayed William Wallace (which is the legend, but no facts back this up).
- Personal experiences with the name Bruce: | Edit
My dad's name is Bruce, and although I'm a little biased, he's one of the top nicest guys in the world.
My Dad's name was Bruce also and he was probably the most wonderful, loving, kind and generous person ever. He passed away from prostrate cancer last year at the too young age of 56, and worked for a university for over 30 years and I can't even remember how many countless people have come up to me and tell me that they wish he was their dad too! I've never met anyone who didn't love my father! Bruce is a great name!!
I love this name because I love Batman (1966) and Batman's real name is Bruce!
Batman's real name was Bruce Wayne, a single man who wore a costume and hung around with a boy named Robin. The character's real name was Adam West.
My son is named William Bruce. We named him after my husband's father who had passed about a year before my son was born. When my husband asked how his dad felt about us naming our child after him, he was ecstatic and requested that we call him Bruce, just like him. We did and now I can't imagine having named him anything thing else. He is smart as a whip and happy all the time.

I'm 54, I have hated my name for this reason-Brucie. You may think it is OK to give your little baby boy a pretty-sounding name like Bruce, but he won't always be a little baby. Please think about that. A name like Bruce is OK if you are a billionaire but most of us are not. Please do NOT name your child Bruce!
About the ELO song: A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Jeff Lynne shouts “Bruce!” . However, according to liner notes, he is actually saying a made-up word “Groos”
