Cowen: Meaning, Popularity, Origin of Baby Name Cowen

Cowen

Pronunciation: n/a

Surnames of the British Isles are a hot American name style. Surnames of Jewish tradition are not...except this one. Cohen is a surprising hit name, propelled by its simple, trendy sound (and by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen). Ironically, religious Jews consider Cohen inappropriate as a baby name; it's a title of the ancient priests of Israel and their descendents. Cowan is an unrelated Celtic surname.

Comments and insights on the name Cowen: | Edit

I found the name originally in the baby name book you advertise all over the place--the baby names by country. It is Irish, but spelled Cowan in the Irish form (the spelling I wish I had used, but was convinced that Owen with a C would be easier for people to pronounce). Recently there was a character on a TV show named Cohen (not sure of the spelling), so the name has increased in popularity.

Personal experiences with the name Cowen: | Edit

My son's name is Cowen, and one of my best friends stole the name but spelled it Coen (like the Coen brothers--the movie directors). I've also seen Cohen, like the last name.
