Comments and insights on the name Dakota: | Edit

This is a perpetually youthful name, which is fine when you're under 10... but over that you need a more substantial name to fall back on - like David, Daniel or Donald.

According to the AKC, Dakota is the 16th most common name for male DOGS registered in 2007.

I love this name for a guy!! Too masculine for a girl!

Additional comment:

I named my son Dakota in 1992 and at that time I had never heard that name. By the time he was 1, I heard it everywhere. He went by Cody in Kindergarten but by 1rst grade he wanted to go by Dakota because "Cody was a baby name". =) On a day to day basis, I have always called him "Coda".
I think it's a great name. My son is now 23 and just became a father himself. He still loves his name.
I don't like this name for a girl either. I agree that it's too masculine.
