Darien, as spelled, is of the male gender. Before the West Indies Trading Company came into existence, there was a Scottish sailing fleet or company called Darien Trading Company. They sailed all the way to what is now the country of Panama, hence the Gulf of Darien and the Darien tribe of indigenous peoples. The name carries an accent on the "i". It is Gaelic in origin, and possibly, also, has Franco origins.

I have loved this name since I saw the movie, The Last Boyscout. Bruce Willis' daughter was named Darian, though I named my daughter Darien before I checked the spelling. Also, Lauren Holly's character in the movie, Beautiful Girls, was named Darian as well.
