This name owes its whole popularity to the tv series "Dawson's Creek," nobody used it before then.
Dawson is also a place name in Montana - the name of a county. It was definitely used in western states before the tv show, although it is more popular after the tv show.

My mother used it in 1957 to name her first born son. Me! :)
I was with the military in England when Dawson's Creek aired in the US. It was on 2 or 3 years by the time I got back. When someone heard my name, they'd say "Dawson's Creek!". For awhile, I had no idea what they were talking about. Still haven't seen that show.

My son is named Dawson. He was named after his Great, great, great grandfather and Not Dawson's Creek. However, most people do think this is the reason. We have heard of only 2 or 3 others after him, it is not that common and we really like that quality. We are not from the Midwest, but are from FL. The other 2 Dawson's are from the South so... The south should be picking up the pace on the Dawson jurisdiction!
