My Great Grandmother, Elmer Effie (Simpson) Tolley born about 1878 in Crittenden co ky to James Huey Simpson and Sarah Catherine (Greer) Simpson. We dont know why or how or where the Elmer came from and by the time it was questioned of us now in the search ancestors we still dont know how she came to be named ELMER. A lady she called Grandma NUNN and worked for on the lady's property who had large land holdings told her Elmer was a man's name and renamed her Elma. Elma later in 1902 marred Robert H Tolley who was clearing the lady Nunns forest. I have found no Elmer's in the family and the only family line I cant find is James Huey Simpson's mother was Louisa Lyzenby daughter of Orpha Marvel and Charles Lyzenby b. 1801 in Livingston co Ky. The Marvel's are traced and Louisa said to be part indian so I guess the Elmer came from either the maternal or paternal side of Charles Lyzenby. Sincerely Denise of Madison co Ill.
Robert Tolley family left Ky went via Tn to Kansas where my gpa was born then by 1920 they were in madison co ill.- Personal experiences with the name Elmer: | Edit
