Gavin Name Meaning & Origin
Origin of the name Gavin:
Of uncertain etymology, some believe Gavin to be from Gwalchmai, a Gaelic name derived from the elements gwalch (a hawk) and maedd (a blow, battle). In Arthurian legend, Gavin is a byname for Sir Gawain, a knight of the Round Table and nephew of King Arthur.

It's really small. While the Celtic origins for the name Gavin remain a popular theory, there is another theory for the origin of this name. This name might come from the Latin name Gavinus, or from the Italian variants Gavino and Gabino. This alternative origin states that the Romans might have brought these names to the Celtic tribes during their occupation. Why? There are many Latin and Italian references for these names that go back thousands of years, while there are not any written Celtic references until the Middle Ages. Not to say that the Celts could not have had an original oral tradition for this name, however, it is interesting that both origins represent a similar meaning. The Celtic theory says that the name means "white hawk," and the Latin theory says that this name means "white falcon." This similar meaning might give some weight to the theory that the Celtic tribes adopted this name from the Romans.

Our sons name is Gavin, We loved the name cause it was different at the time 12 years ago, now it seems there are more boys named gavin then ever. When my son was in the fifth grade the class did a in class survey of names the kids wanted to name thier kids when they grew up and gavin's name ranked number one, so in twenty years or so look for gavin to be a popular name again. Some of the nick names we call him are, gav, big G,and gabs.
My son is named Gavin as well. Our Gavin is strong but sensitive and creative. It fits him perfectly!
My oldest is also named Gavin- named after Gavin Rossdale from Bush. I love the name, but hate that it's so common now. If I could go back, I would have altered the spelling like I did with my daughter's name. Gavyn, Gaven, Gavynn, Gavan- something to make it more unique.
