There are a number of things it could mean, but it's so old that nobody is really sure. The two best guesses at present are "arising" or "vice". I'd go with the first option.

Gwydion in Welsh mythology, who is a vaguely evil bachelor magician who kills the hero Pryderi over a bunch of pigs. He softens up a bit once he gets custody of his nephew, Lleu Llaw Gyffes, and dedicates himself to ridding the poor boy of the curses his mother Aranrhod keeps placing on him.
