it's adorable and playful but at the same time a literary reference and can also be shortened to "Huck" for a more adultish variation.
We've joked with our son about naming a little boy Huckleberry, since our last name starts with H, but I hope he won't do this to him. I couldn't stop laughing when I found out that Bear Grills named his boys Huckleberry and Marmaduke. Somebody who doesn't know the literary and military references might think he named them after two cartoon dogs. It's not a bad nickname, but I'd never do this as a given name.

my awesome friends named their little boy Huckleberry and everyone that hears it thinks it's the BEST NAME EVER.
My beautiful Grand-daughter (now just 3) is Huckleberry and we have had our share of gasps and "oh my's" but like your friends, we have found mostly positive reaction - especially from her kindergarten teachers - there is only one Huckleberry for us - and so far, this is true outside the home. People who can't get used to the name shorten it to "berry" - from her british family she gets Bezza or Bez - I've heard Hucklebuddy - but she is my little Huckleberry - a beautiful little girl with a beautiful name.
