Jude Name Meaning & Origin

Pronunciation: JOOD (key)

This name has a pioneer style and a strong religious heritage that give it impressive gravity. It also has a zippy sound that keeps it unpretentious. The one other choice with that same style combo is Luke, a soaring hit name. Jude is an uncommon alternative with breakout potential. See also: Judah.

Comments and insights on the name Jude: | Edit

St. Jude was originally called Judas Thaddeus. It was shortened to Jude by English translators of the New Testament so that he wouldn't be confused with the other Judas (Judas Iscariot - the one who betrayed Jesus). Most versions of the bible other than English and French refer to Judas and Jude by the same name.

Jude came into use as a unisex name in the 1600s in England during the Protestant Reformation. It is thought to have originated as a shortened form of Judah/Judas and of Judith. Though rare at the time, it was used almost equally for males and females until the mid 1800s, when it started to lean male. The name was used infrequently throughout history until very recently. Over the last two decades, usage has picked up dramatically for males due to the influence of celebrity Jude Law. Usage for females is increasing as well.

My ten month old's name is Jude, for The Beatles. I love music, and I wanted his name to reflect that, so his name Jude Morrison, for The Beatles and The Doors.

Love this name for a boy! I personally think the name is too short and choppy sounding for a girl. Save the name Jude for the dudes.

Personal experiences with the name Jude: | Edit

A sleek, simple yet feminine choice.

Very nice name for a boy or girl.

My 5-year-old daughter is named Jude. We've only met one or two other female Judes. It is unique, spunky and subdued all at once. The perfect name for her.

my older (30's) brother is named Jude and he hates the surge in popularity because he has always loved being the only Jude...most people do not even know his last name. For the record he was named after the Saint, not The Beatles song.

My 3-year-old son (born in 2009) is named Jude and we have gotten overall really positive feedback on his name. I am not a Beatles fan necessarily, but I don't mind the connection to the song. We liked that it was a Biblical name but not very common. His middle name is Patrick, so 2 saints names (which was a coincidence, Patrick is a family name and just sounded good with Jude). I am very happy with the choice we made for his name!

I know two young boys named Jude. One was named for the Beatles song "Hey Jude" and one because of Jude the apostle.
