Murphy was my great-great-grandfather's last name. In 70 years I've met only one other real person (a young man nearly 60 years younger than I am) whose first name is Murphy. When I visited Ireland some years ago, the Irish uniformly considered Murphy an amusing first name. I neither met nor heard of anyone in Ireland whose first name was Murphy.
While Murphy is not entirely unique as a first name, and it's not unusual as a nickname, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more unusual, but not weird, first name.
