Comments and insights on the name Pryderi: | Edit

The pronunciation is a bit of a hurdle for this one. In Welsh the emphasis is usually on the second-to-last syllable, hence Pryderi is pronounced "pruh-DAIR-ee".

However, the name itself has a sleek kind of grace that most modern inventions don't possess. It has ancient roots and some interesting mythology behind it, and a modern baby with this name would likely be thought very cool.

King Pryderi, a character in Lloyd Alexander's "Chronicles of Prydain", based on the character from mythology

Pryderi, a Welsh hero from the Mabinogi. Pryderi was the son of Rhiannon and Pwyll, but he didn't grow up with them, as he was kidnapped by a mysterious clawed creature as an infant and brought up by Teyrnon, a farmer. They called him "Gwri the Golden-Haired" until they noticed his oddly fast growth rate and his legendary riding abilities, upon which time they realized he was the royal family's long-lost son. Unfortunately, Rhiannon had been smeared with puppy blood and told she had eaten her son upon Pryderi's disappearance, as her maids were idiots and didn't want to be blamed for the baby's disappearance, and all the while Pryderi was growing up she was forced to do penance in the sheep-filled Welsh countryside. All worked out in the end, however, and Pryderi proved to be an excellent prince and warrior, although he never had much taste for anything else.
