Comments and insights on the name Skye: | Edit

When people see my husband's name, SKYE, written down they automatically assume he is female.

My sons' name is Keegan-Skye and to me it looks very masculine, but I have had people assume female too.

It's a unisex name. It was popular during the Civil War era in the south. Then it was used more for boys than for girls. Although it's origin is the Isle of Skye in Scotland, it means "sheltering".

Often misheard as "Scott" or "Guy"

Nicknames for Skye: | Edit

I am 14, my name is Skye and I am female. I have 6 younger brothers and sisters and they all found it hard to say Skye, it was always mummy, daddy, and I have a sister a year younger than me called Kadie, these are all similar sounds and Skye was just IMPOSSIBLE to say my family now call me skyzeee, this may not be very masculine but is the only nickname I have ever had. It's not easy to shorten Skye...

Meanings and history of the name Skye: | Edit

In Scotland there is an Isle of Skye. However, I got this name out of an old baby book and it has a meaning for a child (boy or girl). It means "sheltering". It was a popular name in the southern United States around the Civil War era. More boys than girls were named Skye during that period, but it was used for both.

Skye in song, story & screen: | Edit

I got "Skye" from an old children's puppet show from the 90s called, "The Puzzle Place." Skye was the name of my favorite character, a Native American boy. Ever since then, I have been completely in love with it. I hate that it has found rising popularity as a girl's name, however. It may ruin my childhood dream of naming my son Skye.
