We were looking for an uncommon longer first name that had at least 2 syllables, preferably 3, since the surname was short with an abrupt 1-syllable sound.

Stormalong made it onto our list of possible baby names to consider when my husband suggested it. The name came up in several sea shanties (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_shanty) he was playing on the concertina at the time. By the time of my Stormy's birth, we had narrowed it down to two names - Stormalong was chosen due to the traumatic and stormy way he came into the world.
