We wanted an unusual name, but not one which was made-up. I also think it's a strong, masculine name. It's pronounced "Tir." We knew two baby "Thors" and one baby "Loki", also from Norse myths, so "Tyr" wasn't such a stretch in our social circle.

Since it is such a rare name, I usually spell it for people as I introduce my son. Fortunately, it is short and easy to remember once people here it. People who haven't heard it pronounced occasionally mispronounce it "Tyre."
