Meaning is disputed. Herodotus claimed that it means "warrior," but modern scholars propose the meaning is closer to "hero among rulers."
Xerxes I (or Xerxes the Great) succeeded his father, Darius I of Persia, to the throne in 485 BC. He is most famous for his military blunders in Greece, and for his lavish lifestyle. Murdered by his uncle, Artabanus in 465 BC, Xerxes reigned for a mere 20 years.
Xerxes is mentioned in the Bible, by the Hebrew version of his name: Ahaseurus. (Books of Esther, Ezra and Daniel)
There have probably been a few Kings that were called XERXES from Persia, as this is another way of saying "King of the World" (Shah Jahan), "The Great.......", or Caesar for the Romans and Czar in Russia (consecrated by God). Any Muslim King who marries a Jewish Queen, then hangs their enemies from their own gallows is certainly deserving of the title. This Xerxes was quite a bit older than Xerxes I mentioned above.
