Personal experiences with the name Acacia: | Edit

It is a very beautiful, daring and off-beat name choice, that was unfortunately vetoed by my partner because of it's association with Acacia Prison in Western Australia.

-------------------------------------------

This is my name. Having this name has been... interesting. As a child, adults loved it, kids never outright teased me, but I always *felt* that it was too out there. It seems like people who are better educated are able to pronounce my name, and even place it (as biblical and botanical), but a lot of people have trouble. In general, people with masters or PhDs tend to know it; many others outright butcher it. A lot of times I just get called Alicia. It makes me a little crazy. If you are going to use this name, I hope you have a common/easy last name so that when your daughter is an adult, people can save face and say Ms. or Mrs. Lastname if they don't want to attempt to pronounce the first name. For whatever reason, the assumption also seems to be that I'm African American if people only *hear* my name. (I'm actually not African American.) I think it may be the "shuh" sound in the name? (A la Latisha, Keesha, etc.?) I am not sure.
