Meanings and history of the name Acadia: | Edit

Acadia was the land originally settled by the Acadians, the first permanent French colony in the New World. The area covered some of Maine, and stretched across Nova Scotia, with a hub around the Bay of Fundy. They called it "L'Acadie," which was believed to come from a native Miqmac word meaning "Land of Plenty," and was later Anglicized to Acadia. The Acadians were expelled from the area by the British in 1755, some went to Louisiana and became known as Cajuns, others regrouped and found their way back to the area.
