Origin of the name Eileen:

Aileen is my first name--named after my paternal grandmother. She pronounced it (inexplicably) as UH-leen. Therefore, my family called me UH-leen. This was the source of much consternation--no one could ever learn how to pronounce my name and phonetically it made no sense. I started answering to almost any approximation of the name Aileen (Ay-leen, Arlene, Oh-lene). I even use a "starbucks name" of Karen because it is too complicated to explain. About 10 years ago, I started introducing myself as IY-leen, which has helped a lot...people know the name Iy-leen.
**Aileen is my first name, but like most others, I pronounce it "Ay-leen." I was named (oddly) after my Korean aunt, but I'm 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Korean and the etymology of the name shows that it is Irish - from the name "Helen," meaning "Light."
(Continued) I have met very few people with the name Aileen, but have met a number of other people who have friends/family with the name. Almost all of the people I've met or family/friends of people with the name Aileen have told me they pronounce it Ay-leen as well; very few people I've met or heard of who has the name Aileen pronounce it "Eileen/I-lean." Interestingly enough, the name seems to be popular with Filipinos - at least in the San Francisco Bay Area (CA).
(Continued) I don't know where this website got its information from regarding the etymology and pronunciation of the name Aileen, but this website needs to fact-check before posting its information. Ay-leen is the primary pronunciation of the name, with "Eileen" as a secondary pronunciation. The etymology is not Germanic, rather it is Irish.**
This is my name but I don't pronounce it Ay-leen but rather Aah-e-leen, like it's sister spelling Eileen.
I always get compliments on it but it usually takes friends a bit to learn to spell and pronounce.
I my middle name is Aileen; pronounced like Eileen. I don't think anyone has ever spelled or pronounced it correctly on the first try. My husband still has to ask me how to spell it and we've been married for three years.
This is my middle name and i pronounce it A-leen i spell i Aileen.
The proper pronunciation is AY-leen.

My Mom's name is Aileen (pronounced UH-leen; my Grandpa was very adamant that it couldn't be pronounced or spelled any other way!) She never gets it pronounced - or spelled - correctly but I know that she loves it.
