Comments and insights on the name America: | Edit

North and South America get their name from Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. The 1507 Waldseemüller world map is the first to indentify the landmass as "Americas." America is also the colloquial name for the United States of America and has been, by most people on Earth, for over a hundred years. There is a very recent politically-motivated push, mostly by residents of certain countries in Latin America, to disassociate America and the demonym American from the USA, and instead associate both terms with the two continents of North America and South America. A minority of people around the world see these as a single continent of America. However, travel outside of the Western hemisphere and if you try to talk to people about America or Americans and you do not mean the country the USA or the citizens of that country- those you are speaking to will most likely be confused.

America has the same letters as the name Iracema.
