Name may have been derived from the Finnish word "armas", meaning dear or loved one - the name Armas is a male name - or from the word "armo", meaning grace or forgiveness, although this seems less likely as Armo is a very uncommon name (and mainly used for boys) and Armas was very popular in the first half of the 1900s. The name could also be a variant of Armida/Armiida.
The height of popularity for Armi was in the 1940s and 1950s.
