Comments and insights on the name Artemis: | Edit

I am named Artemis, and Artemis is more commonly a boys name in Greece. Both my parents were born over there and I’ve gone many times. I’m well versed in Greek and Roman mythology, and Artemis is a common boys name in Greece. Even though the goddess is female, it is a very common boys name because Artemis is the goddess of the hunt. You would name a baby boy this in Greece to ensure the child provides, protects, and hunts for his family.

(New person writing) First impression is that it's a strong, feminist name. It sounds unisex, which is a trend with girl names. Some people might view this as a boy's name due to the "Artemis Fowl" series, but most who know of Greek mythology will associate it with a girl.

I really like the name Artemis. Even though people choose it in honor of the Greek Goddess, I originally thought that Artemis was more suited as a boy's name.

Personal experiences with the name Artemis: | Edit

Personally my name is Artemis. My parents are both Greek, and I’m a boy, there is a common misconception that Artemis is a female name because the goddess was obviously a female. However in this day in age in Greece it is more commonly used as a male name, for Artemis is the goddess of the hunt. In Greece if you name your baby Artemis it will almost always be a boy, to ensure the child grows up to provide, Hunt, and overall be strong.

Meanings and history of the name Artemis: | Edit

In Greek mythology Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo. She is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women; she is a Greek moon goddess, sometimes depicted with a crescent moon above her head.

She had a group of devoted female followers called the Hunters of Artemis. Many of these were mortal women, but there were also nymphs and other mythological creatures. Like their mistress, the hunters swore to remain virgins, and were punished severely if they broke their vow.
