Meanings and history of the name Bayley: | Edit

My father and I liked his translation of "Bayley"-- meadow (actually dictionaries say grassland/pastureland) by the bay or the non-windward side of the bay-- versus the wall, enclosure, etc or bailiff translations of "Bailey", where Bayley is just a spelling variant. He came up with the translation on his own. There are other dictionary definitions of "ley", "lee", and "lea".

In the late 1990s, with my new computer, we searched on the internet for an English ancestry group about Bayley. He never knew his father and was an only child and I am his only son. We found an English group of Bayleys that had some origin stories. Among the usual one can readily find nowadays, was one I haven't seen since then (I can't find that group nowadays), namely that it is a phonetic spelling of an Irish Gaellic name (I vaguely recall the Gaellic original was spelled "Bailcaneaugh"), an Irish pig farmer who emigrated to York, England, in the 1300s. It even had a picture of what is left of that Irish farm. I don't know if that is the correct spelling of the Gaelic name, nor what that name means.

The group also had some migration histories and biographies. It was comforting to see how many migrating Bayleys in the 1700s and 1800s were like my father and I, e.g. teachers, ministers, and physicians, as if there are some particular genetics attached to "Bayley".

Bailey from Party of Five - though he was a guy. It's a cute girl's name, esp. with this spelling.
