Comments and insights on the name Charlene: | Edit

According to the baby name book "Cool Names" by Pamela Redmond Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz, the name Charlene is 'uncool', compared to the name Charlotte, which is 'cool', and the name Chiara, which is 'cooler'.

Hah! The only reason Charlotte is cool now is because Prince William and Kate named their daughter that. Before that, Charlotte wasn't cool.

Personal experiences with the name Charlene: | Edit

My mom named me Charlene after my father and her name (Christopher and Marlene). I grew up hating my name and complaining that only old women had my name. Later in life, I appreciated that I didn't have a common name and that mine stood out. I grew to love it :)

When I had my kids, I had a strict rule that I would NEVER name any of them after anyone in my family. I had a deal with my husband that I was naming the first kid so he could name the next one. He choose Charlene (I thought it was partly be cause he know it was my favorite charactor "Charlie" in "The Firestarter" by Stephen King). She was several months old before I realized she had my father's name! He always went "Chuck" so it didn't register until I told someone my fathers name was Charles.

My husband's name was Charles and when we were talking about the feminine version of his name he said "I like Charlene, but I don't like Charlotte." I personally liked Charlotte better because I worked with a Charlene whom I couldn't stand. Now, because of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Charlotte is a hot item and everybody is naming their daughters Charlotte. I think Charlotte is a very lovely name.
