Cherith is often taken from the Bible. There is a passage in the bible, 1 Kings 17, the story of the prophet Elijah, where he is fed by the ravens next to the brook Cherith.

This comment surprised me as my MIL's name is Brooke Cherith

Hi, I'm a real live Cherith - I was given this name in 1959 when unusual names weren't commom - I grew up surrounded by Sue's, Cathy's, Nancy's and Carol's...that said, I do think there is some truth to the idea that we live up to our names - I have had a wonderful life and can proudly say that I'm intelligent, accomplished and well-rounded. My niece, also named Cherith is the same - but she's a Tai Kwan Do Master and I'm not (that means she can kick some serious butt)! Interestingly also is that there is a Cherith Harrison living in Scotland who is a graphic designer. All three Cherith's that I know well are creative!

No one seems to have weighed in on the pronunciation - it's Ker ith for me with a "hard c" sound...it makes for a lot of confusion so I would say that the name is not for the shy or faint hearted. And P.S. - no one ever, ever remembers your name - I've known people for months before they get it right! Oh well, something to consider if you're considering the name Cherith.

My name is Cherith Lynn. I've always loved it. In my 21 years, I've only come across one person with my name (sorta). She spelled hers Chereth, and pronounced it differently. My nickname is Cherrie. If people get lazy, I'm called Cher.
