My name is Darthula. I am named after my grandmother who spelled it Dar Thula. My parents put it together to make one word. It is Gaelic. In the 1100's the name means "Daughter of Heaven" and the newer meaning from late 1700's means "woman with beautiful eyes".
I have always loved my name. It has made me a stronger, confident individual and I am proud to have such a unique name. It is as unique as I am. I love being the only "Darthula" and not some popular common name. It is very feminine and beautiful.
It is pronounced as follows: (3 syllables, emphasis on the middle syllable) DAR-THU-LA
DAR (like car) THU (U sounds like the double "oo" in the word "boo" ...like a ghost says, "boo" ) LA (A is pronounced like the "U" in the word "cup")And just so you know. Do NOT nickname your child "DAR" because in Spanish, it is the verb "to give" so needless to say I hated Spanish and all the guys in my class..haha
And something else to mention....I have "been "Darth Vader" since 1977. Everyone would tell me to "go to the light", "Luke, I am your father"...lots of "Death March" humming while walking down school hallways. However, I do have to say, when Episode I came out with Darth Maul as the infamous new enemy...my maiden last name is Mauldin.....soooo, I still get an email now and then reminding me of the likeness...but ONLY by name. The name stands out and people remember, but usually they don't remember exactly how to say it.
On the negative side, be prepared for a lifetime of "pauses", "butchering", "adding of letters that are not in the spelling", etc. before the name is called. Very few people..maybe 2 of 10 will attempt pronunciation without asking me first.
My best friend of 39 years (known each other since we were 2 years old) is the only one that calls me "Dar". Everyone else calls me by my full name. I prefer that because it is my "identity" ...however, my husband does call me "Thula" which was my grand mother's nickname. She was born in the 1876 I believe. My mom called me "Tulita" which means in Spanish, "Thula with love".
