Personal experiences with the name Delphine: | Edit

I just named my baby girl Delphine, and in one month I have had many misspellings and many questions about how to pronounce it. I have already stumbled upon Delphin, Delphina, Delfine & Delpheine. Many people say that they have never heard of this name. I still love Delphine and yet I am surprised at the reaction it has received.

A friend of mine named her daughter Delphine Mairead. It's very different and you could even call it exotic, but I don't like it. Delphine sounds a bit like "Dolphin".

It sounds like dolphin because it comes from the Greek word for dolphin! But what is wrong with that - who doesn't like dolphins!? I love them, and think that this name is a great way to honour a water-baby. It also has the French slant to it and is like the flower, Delphinium (see meaning below). I am in love with this name.

Delphinium is commonly known as Larkspur, and is the allocated birth flower of July (in the UK at least).

Named my daughter this name a few months back. Love it because 1) it's French (and as an ethnic Vietnamese, we have 3 generations of female French names in our family), and 2) it has 4 meanings, including a person, place, thing/flower and animal. Person= 14th century saint that was one of the first to marry. Place= Delphi, in Greece, also known as "naval of the world" and famous as the Oracle of Delphi. Flower= Delphinium/ Larkspur (which in blues and purples, it grows tall and beautiful). And of course, the animal, Dolphin. :-)

Meanings and history of the name Delphine: | Edit

Delphine is the French form of Delphina and the feminine form of the Roman name Delphinus. Delphinus means "of Delphi" in Latin. Delphi is a Greek city, which in ancient times was the site of the famous Delphic oracle. The name of this ancient Greek city possibly relates to the Greek word δελφις, "dolphin".

The Greek word for dolphin (delphis) is also the inspirational name of the flowering plant, commonly known as Larkspur, scientifically known as Delphinium, so-named because of the flower heads shaped like a dolphins. So the name Delphine actually comes from the flower, Delphinium, which is named after our dolphin friends of the sea.
