Comments and insights on the name Elowyn

I came up with the name Elowyn as a variation of Elwyn when reading a post about baby names inspired by authors. Author E.B. White’s first name was Elwyn and it made me think what a lovely name Elowyn would be. I’m certain I’m not the only one to come up with it, but I definitely hadn’t heard it before.

This name is about to go off and I call dibs! Elowen, the Cornish word for Elm is the acceptable spelling with a L-O-N pronunciation. Elowyn is the American version with an El-oh-winn sound, considered more feminine while others believe more masculine, to each his own. Other spellings include Ellowyne, Ellawyn, Ellowene. Each spelling may influence its pronunciation to the more win sounding ending. Nicknames include El, Ellie, Lowe, Owen, Win, and Winnie to name a few. This name has yet to crack the SSA top 1000 with only a small number given this name is 2015 (less than 50). It has a poetic, romantic , fairytale, Tolkein elf, flowery, natural feel. Any number of middle names pairs well like Grey, Sage, and my choice Ardith. Get in while the getting is good as this will be the next Sofia!
