Personal experiences with the name Fern: | Edit

-I've always loved my name, it's unusual but not made up. Kids never made fun of me and has a young adult my friends have often lengthened it into Ferny as a nickname. The only other real people I've ever heard of with the same name are much, much older.
-I am also named "Fern" and I am a 15 year old iconoclast. Trust me, YOU DON'T WANT TO BURDEN A CHILD WITH A NAME LIKE MINE! I've been made fun of since the first grade, and I am not particularly mean, or ugly, or anything of the sort. "Fern" is a farmer name- and might be cool for those of you who live on a ranch, and plan to stay on a ranch; but if you want your kid to be invited to any sleepovers don't name her Fern! First of all, it always makes people assume that I am the librarian type, or one of those "hilly-billy" types (minus the comfort of at least a Valley Girl's social standing), or a super goth (which I actually tried for a while and got bored of), or a nature freak--- which I am. For the record, my name corresponds rather well with my letter grade (as an average) in school(don't get the wrong idea- I am taking six AP's at once); though I am not particularly lazy or particularly dull. I've actually joined this forum seeking a name for myself--- since I have always been dissatisfied with the ugly sound and ugly namesake (i.e. the plant) "Fern", and I hope to actually achieve some ends in life in the business world, and have found that professors are biased, whether they know it or not, and tend to look at me differently once they've learned my name-- I've been graded more harshly than your average "Sophia" or "Madison", since people see a hick or a cold blooded goth as they are grading my papers. Studies have been conducted at major schools; proving that name discrimination takes place in every setting- whether you are applying for a job or applying for a school- it happens! Please if you are considering naming your child Fern, consider her opinion, and remember that kids are mean and the world is unfair.
