Filomena is a really beautiful name is pronounced correctly(Felomana). It happens to be my name and I am 40 year old...it has been carried down every other generation for six generations as far as I know. My mother is a full blooded Spanard-American she was born in Houston, Texas from my Immigrant grandparents. I'm a second generation spanish-american. Filomena was a Saint in 1527 or so and since in the 19th century was also believed to be a second Saint. The name is also spelled different ways depending on Latin, Greek, Italian etc... Philomena, Filomena, Philomenus etc... Greek Philomenes, composed of the elements meaning philein to love + menos strength. The best way to tell people how to pronounce it is....FI- like FiFi the dog short I, LO- like in loyal, ME- like your saying man, NA- like it is naaaaa. It can be tricky for the tongue. I am proud of my name it was my grandmother's and her grandmother's name.....but, I go by Marie my middle name I don't hide it and actually you'd be surprised how many men like it when they say it. I been told it is very sexy, pretty, and beautiful unfortunately my daughter broke the tradition with her two daughter's she decided not to go with my name Filomena in some ways I do understand. It wasn't that bad growing up a couple kids said something and called me fi fi like the dog and fido but it was cousins mostly kidding me....I got teased more in school about the close I wore than my name.

English and German: from the name of an obscure saint (probably of the 3rd century) with a local cult in Italy. In 1527 the bones of a young woman were discovered under the church altar at San Severino near Ancona, together with a Latin inscription declaring them to be the body of St Filomena. Her name seems to be a feminine form of Latin Philomenus, from Greek Philomenes, composed of the elements philein to love + menos strength. The name became popular in the 19th century, as a result of the supposed discovery in 1802 of the relics of another St Philomena in the catacombs at Rome. All the excitement, however, resulted from the misinterpretation of the Latin inscription Filumena pax tecum “peace be with you, beloved” (from Greek philoumena beloved).
Filomena-Greek Lover of humanity. She is marked by her great kindnessz and compassion toward others. Very loving, forgiving and caring.
Filomena- in English is Phyllis or Phillis
