This name seems to be more popular in the north west of England.
Gaynor was my grandmother's name, her parents were English/Irish/Welsh, so I assume the entry above is correct, in that it is probably an English name, or Welsh. I was never sure how this name was pronounced, because some people said Gay-na and some said Gay-nor, so I suppose either is possible! Really pretty name, with a lovely meaning - it's a shame kids with this name nowadays would probably get teased! :(
- Personal experiences with the name Gaynor: | Edit
Gaynor is an old Welsh name derived from Guinevere. My family are originally from the Welsh borders area and while Gaynor isn't a common name, it is not unusual in the UK. I was born in Salford and grew up in Eccles and Monton, there was only one other Gaynor at Eccles Grammar. I like my name, but in the US people tend to think I am either a man. I have been called everything you can think of from Dayna to Gator. My name is pronounced Gainer. And it is never, ever, shortened.
