Some people mispronounce it saying it with a hard g as in the word go.
When I was little I wanted to have a "normal" name but as I've grown up I've embraced having a unique name in America. Part of me is very interested to go to Europe and Australia and not get a 2nd glance at my name whereas here in the US I know when people take a minute before they say a name that its probably mine.
Most people absoultely love my name and no matter what, it is memorable! I am extremely happy with my name now :)
I love my name even though I'm from the US and most people aren't familiar with it. I've always liked that its unique and upon meeting people I usually get a comment about how pretty or unusual the name Gemma is. The only thing that's ever bothered me was that lots of people say it at first with a hard G. I mean, we say gem and gemstone with a j sound, why would Gemma be different?
My sister has just named her little girl Jemma (Feb2011, Australia) and coincidentally my friend named her little girl Gemma at virtually the same time!
I named my daughter Gemma in 2000. It's still a special, unique name for such a beautiful girl. She's always been the only Gemma in her school.
My best friend is called Gemma and I'm a Jemma to. We always get mixed up though and Gemma or Jemma is quite a common name where I live. I love the name though and wish my name was spelt with a G instead of a J.
My name is Gemma and I get a lot of people saying the name is pretty and asking where it came from.
My name is Gemma. It has only once been mispronounced with a hard G. I like it, but people who don't know me often spell it with a J. I know quite a few other Gemmas and also a few Jemmas. I like it better with a G, because the nickname "Gem" looks less masculine than "Jem" and it's also spelt the same way as the precious stone/gem. Everyone likes and comments on my name when they hear it.
