Comments and insights on the name Indigo: | Edit

Indigo has a powerfully creative/artistic image. Used for both boys and girls.

Indigo is NOT a girls name! It's not even unisex. The word itself is a masculine form.I can't imagine a girl named Indigo. It would be like naming a girl Bruno. <--- whilst -o is usually a male form of name there are always exceptions to the rule (such as Juno, Cleo ect), and Indigo definately sounds like a girls name, and not like a boys name. And Indie is definately a more feminine nicname.

I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS A NAME. I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS A WORD!

I really like this name, it's gorgeous and unique. I think Indigo sounds more feminine.

Personal experiences with the name Indigo: | Edit

I have named my SON Indigo (he's known as Indi mostly) and can't understand why it is predominantly considered a girls name. Not only is the colour Indigo a very dark purply blue, which seems a very masculine colour to me, but the "O" ending is masculine sounding too - eg Hugo/Orlando/Marco... I can't think of another girls name with this ending and think in many languages the "O" ending is indeed considered masculine. It's a beautiful name for a boy or a girl, but I do wish so many books/web sites (including this one) didn't list it as only a femail name!!! I know there are other boys here in the UK named Indigo. It should be listed as gender unspecific.

My nephew is named Indigo and he is adorable! So sweet and so smart, kind of a serious 4 year old but very sweet. I think of it as more of a boy name. I don't think its unisex at all. My dad calls him "Indy" which is also cute.

This web site does list it as a unisex name.

I named my daughter Indigo for 3 reasons. 1- she is our "rainbow baby" after many losses, so I loved the idea of a color name for her. 2-Blue and purple are my favorite colors. 3- It is a beautiful name and just felt right!
The reaction to her name so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Even people who might think its 'out there" still think it is beautiful.
