Comments and insights on the name Jessica: | Edit

My sister's name is Jessica and she's the best. She's simply amazing. She has blonde hair and hazel eyes and she's no bimbo. I've decided to call her jessypoo.

A really pretty and unique way to spell Jessika is with a K.

Personal experiences with the name Jessica: | Edit

I had a wife named Jessica. She was a beautiful blond, and she was so funny. The name Jessica brings up such good, and such bad memories. It's a really beautiful name, and I love it.

To the above: are you divorced now?

My name is Jessica. I think it's pretty, but it's just SO POPULAR. I know/have known of so many Jessica's throughout my life. I've also been told that I don't really look like a Jessica cause it seems to be associated with blonde bimbos far too often. (Maybe because of Jessica Simpson? Thanks a lot, girl.) I also find that so many people who don't even know me just automatically shorten it to Jess without my permission, which I don't like as much. Basically, the name Jessica was a good idea at one point. So good that everyone decided to hop aboard that boat, and now the boat is sinking. Not a good idea anymore. Don't do it.

My four best friends are ALL named Jessica. I call one Jess, one Jessie, and the other two by their last names. It can be very confusing at times. I would not recommend anyone to name their kid Jessica. It is just way to popular. Other than my four best friends, I can honestly name another 8 Jessica's I've met.

Jessica is my name and I like it I'll admit it was way too popular when I was in school. As an adult it hasn't been a problem at all. Oh and I am a blonde but NOT a bimbo!

This is my second favorite girls' name and like my first favorite girls' name, I can't use it because it's already been used by another family member. My cousin is Jessica and she's the funniest person in the world. Knowing her is a blessing. But if her parents had used a different name for her then I may have used it for my own daughter. I love the way it looks in writing and the way it sounds.

Meanings and history of the name Jessica: | Edit

This name was first used in this form by Shakespeare in his play 'The Merchant of Venice' (1596), where it belongs to the daughter of Shylock. Shakespeare probably based it on the biblical name ISCAH which would have been spelled Jesca in his time. Popular in the late 1800s, it returned to popularity in the late 1960s.

From the Hebrew Yiskah meaning "to see or look." It is explained by Hebrew scholars as another name for Sarai/Sarah, who was recognized for her great beauty and also the gift of prophesy.

Alternatively, a pet form of Janet from Hebrew Yohannah meaning "Grace of God" or feminine of Jesse from Hebrew Yishai meaning "God exists" or "God's gift."
