In Sophocles' tragedy, Jocasta was the wife of Laius and mother of Oedipus. After being sent out to die because it was foretold that he would kill his father and marry his mother, Oedipus grew up in ignorance of his origins and eventually returned to (unknowingly) do just that. Jocasta and Oedipus had several incestuous children together, one of whom was Antigone, about whom another tragedy by Sophocles was written. Jocasta killed herself shortly after realizing her grave misdeed.
