Kimberly: Meaning, Popularity, Origin of Baby Name Kimberly
Origin of the name Kimberly:
Of debated origin, Kimberely seems to be a borrowing of the name of the South African city and diamond-mining center. This Kimberley is though to be derived from kimberlite, a kind of peridotite rock which contains diamonds. Others think it to be derived from Lord Kimberley, whose name is believed to be a compound name composed of an Old English personal name of unknown meaning and lēah (wood, clearing, meadow, enclosure). Kimberely originated as a male name but is now more common as a female name.

News regarding the USS Kimberly may have influenced some mothers to use the name Kimberly. The USS Kimberly was named for Admiral Lewis A. Kimberly by his daughter, and was launched in 1943 out of Staten Island, NY. The USS Kimberly came to Boston Naval Shipyard in July 1966 for overhaul prior to being loaned to the government of the Republic of China. My mother said I was named for the diamond mines in Africa. But I was born just one month after the USS Kimberly docked in Boston.

My name is spelled with an "ie" and is very unique - KIMBERLIE. I have only met 2 other Kimberlie(s)in my 41 years. Consequently, you always have to spell it, so people get it right on forms, paper work and etc. Kind of a pain!
To the above: Are you Kim Fisher?
My very best friend is named Kimberly. She's got walls 50 miles high but it was worth getting past them.
I love my NAME:)
Kimberly became very popular in the 60's, it was almost like Jennifer. Everybody was naming their daughters Kimberly and Tammy. Then those 2 names just got dropped. I really liked the name Kimberly, still do, but none of the Kimberlys are ever called Kimberly, they're all called Kim, just like none of the Pamelas are called Pamela, they're all called Pam. I think it's sad to take such beautiful names and shorten them.
My name is Kimberly but I have always been called Kimmie. I'm 26 and there were a few other Kim's at my school, but no Kimmie's. I have no complaints about my name.
I'm also a Kimberly, but I've been called Kimmy all my life. In sixth grade, my teacher told me it was "time to move on to a more adult name," like Kim or Kimberly. (I've remained a Kimmy, if just to spite her.)
I really like this name, but none of the Kimberly's are ever called Kimberly - they're all called Kim. I think shortening a beautiful name spoils it. They should leave these beautiful names alone.
Not all of the Kimberlys are called Kim. I am a Kimberly and I have always been called Kimberly. My mother always wanted me to be called by my full name. Then again, my mother named me after the character from Melrose Place who slept with the doctor and ruined his marriage - yay.
I was born in 1968 and named Kimberly. There were always like 3 of us in every class. Now, no one names their daughters this, a fact that I am rather ambivalent about. My main problems with my first name are: (1) outside of the English-speaking world, it does not sound like a girl name and does not work in foreign languages for this reason, and (2) the nickname Kim did not work with my one-syllable maiden name. By the time you got ready to hear a name, it was already past in a blur. Thank goodness I have a two-syllable married name. Think, parents, think, before you name your kid something that does not work practically!
