Li Li or Lili is a recognized German diminutive (nickname) for the name Elizabeth

Personal experiences with the name Li Li: | Edit

My mother's family has a seven generation history of the eldest female child naming their first female child Elizabeth, and it is recorded on an antique silver pie knife, to be presented to the Elizabeth upon her marriage (in order to cut the wedding cake, and of course, keep the tradition). After so many generations, you can imagine many of the nicknames for Elizabeth had been used by the time my daughter was born in 2003. I am Lisa, my mother Betsy; there has been a Lizzie, Libby, Liddy, Bette, etc., all corresponding with the popular nicknames of the times. Because none of the most current nicknames appealed to me (e.g., Beth, Liz, Lizzie, Ellie -- VERY common in '03) I searched and searched and stumbled upon "Li Li" (or "Lili") in a baby book, the name of which I cannot recall, given as a German diminutive of Elizabeth. Since my Mother is part German, (and I loved it), I felt it very apropos. So, Li Li is my daughter Elizabeth's nickname. Unfortunately, I did not realize that the name "Lily" (which is how most people pronounce her name) was hugely popular that year. So, like me (a "Lisa", born in 1967 with five other Lisas in my high school graduating class), she is one of many Lilys, Lillies, and Lillys, in her school classes and camps. So much for my "original" idea!!!! We love it, though, and so does she. She is definitely a "Lili" in personality (although people are extremely challenged by the spelling, and, that it is a nickname), and only "Elizabeth" when she's in trouble!
