My mother named me after a neighbor who she looked up to as a child. Mom said she was very pretty and kind. I didn't appreciate the name as a child because no one in my family or at school could pronounce it correctly (accent on Mel). Later I liked that it was unusual, and I've met people who knew other Melvas but never met one myself.
