Mika is a Japanese name for girls, pronounced 'MEE-kah'. It has been quite popular in Japan since the 1960's, especially in the 70's/80's, but it's still reasonably well-used today. It's also popular among Japanese-Americans and Japanese living abroad, since it blends in well with English/European girl's names. Like most Japanese names, Mika can be written with many different Japanese characters, each with their own meaning. The only Mika I know is really a Michelle but likes to be called Mika as her nickname.

Some people have trouble with the pronunciation and say it Micah. Most people love the that the name is uncommon but not too exotic or strange. It's short and easy to remember and I always get compliments on it. I hated it when I was younger, I wanted to be another Ashley or Jessica like everyone else but as I got older I learned to appreciate individualism and am grateful for a name that sets me apart.
