My mother is named Nelwyn. It's an old family name that has been passed down (Welsh). If I have a girl I really want to use this name.

I found on one site that Nellie is greek for "the bright one". I have see Newlyn in books as a welsh name that means New Lake.
Also, those little people in the movie Willow were called Nelwyns, which I find funny b/c my mom is quite short.

I know two ladies born at the beginning of the 20th century with this name. I have not found the meaning on any name websites, and the actual name on only one.

Meanings and history of the name Nelwyn: | Edit

As near as I can gather, the Old English name Nel (or Nelle) means torch. Wynn is German for White, fair, blessed. In Welch it means Joyful. So the combination of names from the same area would mean Joyful torch. Considering what a joy my friend Nelwyn is, and a torch that draws people to her because of this joy, it fits.
