Personal experiences with the name Onie: | Edit

My great-grandmother's name was Onie. She was born in the 1890s and is the only Onie I had ever heard of until last year when I met a woman in her 70s or 80s at a dance conference by that name. In the dancer's case, Onie was a nickname for Leona, because there were several Leonas her age growing up. So, they each adopted a nickname to distinguish themselves from one another. I have wondered if my great-grandmother's name was also a nickname, but the census reports only ever list her as 'Onie' or 'Onnie.'
