Greek word for "siren" : (Greek singular: Σειρήν Seirēn; Greek plural: Σειρῆνες Seirēnes) which were the mythological creatures found in Greek legends. They are often misinterpreted as mermaids but sirens are actually an avian hybrid. Cautioned British literary scholar, linguist and feminist Jane Ellen Harrison: "...the sirens, though they sing to mariners, are not sea-maidens; they dwell on an island in a flowery meadow."

Written of by: the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso (20 March 43 BC – AD 17/18) known as Ovid in the English-speaking world, the Latin author Gaius Julius Hyginus (ca. 64 BC – AD 17), and the last of the three great tragedians of classical Athens Euripides (Ancient Greek: Εὐριπίδης) (ca. 480 BC – 406 BC).
