Greek word for "siren" : (Greek singular: Σειρήν Seirēn; Greek plural: Σειρῆνες Seirēnes) which were the mythological creatures found in Greek legends. They are often misinterpreted as mermaids but sirens are actually an avian hybrid. Cautioned British literary scholar, linguist and feminist Jane Ellen Harrison: "...the sirens, though they sing to mariners, are not sea-maidens; they dwell on an island in a flowery meadow."
