Comments and insights on the name Taffy: | Edit

There are other people named Taffy, but I have never met another.
Once someone gets my name, they never forget it. (At first, it is, usually, "Is that Cathy with a C or a K?," to which I respond, "A T." Then, I have their attention.)
I like my name, Taffy.

Personal experiences with the name Taffy: | Edit

When I was born, my then 2 1/2 year old brother mispronounced my given name Stephanie as Taphanie. So, my nickname and, in most cases, my legal name became Taffy.

My name is Stephanie also with the same nickname, Taffy, because when I was born my sister, who is 18mo older than I, also couldn't say Stephanie and it came out Taffy and the name stuck. I didn't use Stephanie until I was grown and started my first job. Now where I work there was several Stephanie's so I started using my nickname. I talk to people all over the U.S. and they also call me Taffy. I have Taffy on my business cards so most of the people I associate with call me Taffy. I feel more comfortable using it than my given name. I asked my great niece where her Auntie Stephanie was and she replied, Aunt Taffy, I don't have a Auntie Stephanie. I asked her if she was sure and she said yes Auntie Taffy I don't have a Auntie Stephanie.

In my early twenties, coming out of a slate mine, in Wales, a Welshman gave each visitor a piece of slate, then with a stylus, he would write on the slate, in Gaelic, whatever we wanted. It was the first year, ever, that I was missing a son's birthday, so when it was my turn, I dictated, "Happy Birthday, Ricky. Love, Taffy." All had been going well, until I got to my name. At that point, the Welshman froze and glared at me. Fortunately, my father saw what was happening and quickly stepped forward, saying, "No, no, that is her name." AND, I have Welsh ancestry!

Taffy in song, story & screen: | Edit

Since the English looked down on most other British subjects, including the Welsh, an English nursery rhyme came to be, in the mid-1800's, referring to the Welsh as Taffy. See below:

Taffy was a Welshman

Taffy was a Welshman,
Taffy was a thief;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a side of beef.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not home;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a marrow bone.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not in;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a silver pin.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was in bed;
I took up a poker
And threw it at his head.

Taffy was the little cavegirl heroine of Rudyard Kipling's story, "How the Alphabet Was Made," in Just So Stories.
