I have heard it derives from the japanese nick name for tornado, and when our Torrie was small she really lived up to that nick name.

my daughter's name is Torrie, my husband picked it because it sounded like my name,Lorrie, I liked it because it was different name I had'nt heard at the time, she is now 29 years old.
